The Position
A healthier future. It’s what drives us to innovate. To continuously advance science and ensure everyone has access to the healthcare they need today and for generations to come. Creating a world where we all have more time with the people we love. That’s what makes us Genentech, a member of the Roche Group.
The Opportunity
This pivotal position will focus on advancing our nucleic acid construct generation capabilities using innovative molecular biology tools and approaches. As a key player within the Drug Discovery organization, you will be responsible for establishing and driving an innovative strategy in support of a diverse range of research and portfolio projects. This collaborative role at the intersection of protein expression, cell engineering, research biology and other groups offers the opportunity to work closely with other scientists and group leaders, both within and beyond the team, to improve protein production, nucleic acid library generation, cell line development, and the exploration of new therapeutic modalities.
Job Responsibilities:
• Lead the design and generation of DNA constructs: Advise on and coordinate the generation of thousands of nucleic acid constructs annually applying both outsourced and in-house capabilities.
• Optimize molecular biology workflows: Design and complete lab experiments to optimize and accelerate cloning, mutagenesis and other molecular biology protocols, while troubleshooting issues as they arise.
• Innovate and collaborate: Employ creative and innovative ways to support and enable the generation of simple and sophisticated nucleic acid constructs or libraries, and the expression of both straightforward and challenging protein targets. Stay up to date on the state of the art in the field and collaborate with scientists across the research organization to prioritize and address key scientific questions.
• Manage and communicate data: Use internal LIMS platforms to efficiently handle requests, gather experimental data, and effectively communicate results to team members and collaborators through emails and presentations.
Who You Are
Required Qualifications:
• Expertise in molecular biology techniques: Proficiency with innovative molecular biology techniques and tools (such as Gibson assembly and Golden Gate gene assembly platforms, CRISPR/Cas9, automated DNA synthesis, robotic liquid handling and more).
• Innovation in process improvement: Consistent track record of success in piloting and implementing innovative approaches to improve cloning and expression processes.
• Expertise in the design and implementation of sequence elements in construct design: Deep understanding of vector backbones, promoters, non-coding elements such as 5’/3’ UTRs and linker sequences (eg. IRES), CRISPR elements (eg. sgRNA design), and codon optimization.
• Bioinformatics proficiency: Experience with the use and implementation of bioinformatics tools and databases for assisted/automated construct design, sequence annotation, data analysis and process optimization.
• Education and experience: Master’s degree in Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry or related scientific discipline with 5-8 years of molecular biology experience, or PhD in Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry or related scientific discipline with 3-4 years of molecular biology experience.
Desired Skills:
• Protein Engineering: Familiarity with protein engineering design principles and approaches, including but not limited to saturation mutagenesis and fusions/tags to facilitate protein expression and purification.
• Leadership and mentoring: Experience in leading and mentoring scientist colleagues and team members.
• Cross-functional collaboration: Consistent track record of effective collaboration with cross-functional teams.
• Project management: Strong organizational and project management skills, with the ability to balance multiple projects simultaneously.
• Lab Automation Experience: Familiarity with the use of lab automation, including experience with liquid handlers and partially or fully automated workflows, as well as implementation of high-throughput workflows is preferred.
