Position Summary
The Office of Overseas Programs in Arts & Sciences’ Study Abroad Advisor provides comprehensive, high-quality study abroad advising to undergraduate students in the Liberal Arts. Overseas Programs is a unit of the largest undergraduate program at Washington University, the College of Arts & Sciences, which contains approximately 4,600 degree-seeking undergraduate students. The study abroad advisor will provide guidance and support to applicants through the full trajectory of the study abroad process. In conjunction with the Assistant Director – Advising, they will also be responsible for the development and execution of programming and events that enhance the academic mission of Overseas Programs.
Job Description
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
Serves as a study abroad advisor for undergraduate students.
• Provides supportive one-on-one advising to students throughout the study abroad planning process and ongoing advising support to students enrolling in programs in assigned program portfolio.
• Interprets and explains study abroad policies, procedures, and curriculum to students, faculty, staff, and administration.
• Guides students through administrative processes for WashU and study abroad program.
• Identifies and helps resolve obstacles to participation and success in study abroad.
• Analyzes students’ academic and personal considerations or concerns and provides referral or intervention services.
• Supports students in planning to meet study abroad and graduation requirements, communicating nuanced information about the relationship between Arts & Sciences and foreign curricula.
• Liaises with Arts & Sciences’ College Office, departments, and programs to ensure a holistic student academic experience.
• Provides support to students, families, and senior staff in Overseas Programs in the event of an emergency abroad in assigned region.
• Maintains appropriate student records and document student interactions.
Manages productive relationships with new and existing partners for assigned portfolio of study abroad programs.
• Develops and maintains relationships with key strategic international education partners in US and abroad.
• Monitors key changes in the field as they pertain to best practices in international educational experiences for Arts & Sciences students, and, in consultation with the Assistant Director – Advising , implement evidenced-based best practices.
• Communicates regularly with partners regarding program curriculum and student matters, if necessary through site visits.
Plans and executes assigned programming and communications.
• At the direction of the Assistant Director – Advising, plays a key role in the coordination, execution, and maintenance of assigned communications and programming supporting study abroad initiatives.
• Serves as a project contact person.
• Produces a variety of programming-related materials, which could include social media posts, documents, reports, and proposals.
• Executes daily tasks and track progress of programs.
• In conjunction with the Assistant Director – Advising, plays a key role in the design of communication and programming goals, including development and implementation.
• Ensures deadlines and budgets are adhered to.
• In consultation with the Director and the Assistant Director – Advising, identifies and streamlines processes for improvement and growth (particularly with regard to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility).
• May provide guidance, direction, or supervision to undergraduate student workers.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications
• Master’s degree.
• Previous experience advising students in an educational or academic setting.
• Previous experience in international education.
• Knowledge of liberal arts curricula and of concepts, practices, and procedures related to undergraduate education
• Knowledge of a foreign language.
• Ability and willingness to travel internationally for conferences, program visits.
• Strong commitment to cultivating relationships with students in the context of a learning environment and to delivering excellent information and guidance.
• Proven interpersonal and communication skills, written and verbal. Audiences should include students, faculty, staff, and other stakeholders.
• Sound judgement and high level of maturity, including ability to handle confidential information responsibly in sensitive situations involving students.
• Ability to project genuineness and warmth as a service-oriented communicator.
• Ability to thrive in a position that requires independent judgement and to step in as a reliable team member on various collaborative projects as needed.
• Ability to anticipate student needs and act to address them.
• High degree of self-motivation, organization, accuracy, and productivity with an ability to manage time, meet deadlines, and follow-through on projects in a timely manner with varying degrees of pressure.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree and three years of related work experience or a Master’s degree and one year of related experience.

Salary Range
$49,700.00 – $82,100.00 / Annually
The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one’s qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
