Upper School History Teacher (FT) Fulltime

GENERAL SUMMARY:

Roland Park Country School, a K-12 independent girls’ school, seeks a full-time Upper School History Teacher. The history teacher reports directly to the Upper School Head and is a valued member of the History Department. The individual in this role will foster an exciting, dynamic, and creative learning environment wherein students acquire inquiry skills and an in-depth understanding of historical thinking. This individual collaborates with passionate educators to engage and inspire students to develop an interest in authentic historical analysis, research, and writing.

The Upper School History Department is committed to helping students succeed in an increasingly globalized, diverse, and digital world. We believe an understanding of history makes one an informed citizen of RPCS, the community, the nation, and the world. We believe that all voices contribute to a well-rounded view of history and allow us to participate in public discourse. We are a collaborative group of educators: teamwork permeates the department overall, and decisions are derived through discussion and consensus building. Within the Upper School, students study two years of World History and one year of U.S. History. We also offer a rich variety of rigorous courses as senior year upper-level electives, ranging from global to local in their focus and examining the world through a variety of critical lenses. Through our curriculum, we aim to graduate informed, analytical, and critical scholars who not only identify problems but orient themselves toward solutions.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Plans, assesses, and teaches History to Upper School students at RPCS and in our coordinated Tri-School program with Gilman and Bryn Mawr Schools.
• Demonstrates excellence in teaching.
• Attends Upper School division and department meetings.
• Collaborates with History Department colleagues.
• Posts assignments on myRPCS, completes grades and comments each quarter.
• Engages in ongoing self-reflection and professional growth, actively seeking opportunities to enhance teaching practices, cultural competence, and understanding of diverse learners.
• Serves as academic advisor to a group of 10-12 students.
• Potentially serves as an advisor to student clubs and extracurricular activities.
• Other reasonable duties as assigned from time to time by the Upper School Head or Head of School.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Remain in a stationary position, often sitting or standing for extended periods of time.
• Repeat motion of wrists, hands, and fingers to operate standard office equipment, such as a computer, printer, and phone.
• Requires visual acuity to read a variety of written materials.
• Physical agility: stand, kneel, walk, run, push/pull, squat, twist, turn, bend, stoop, reach overhead, crouch, and can respond to emergencies.
• Must be able to move around and access all parts of the campus upon request, which includes gym, turf, fields, dining hall, etc.
• Occasionally ascend and descend stairs in emergency situations.

WORK CONDITIONS :
• The Upper School History Teacher is a full-time, exempt position.
• The individual in this position is expected to work during all hours as may be assigned by the School and during other hours for events and activities.
• The Upper School History Teacher is expected to perform their job duties on campus unless otherwise permitted by the Head of School.
• As a condition of employment, all employees hired after August 1, 2021, are required to be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 and be able to provide proof of such vaccination.

BACKGROUND CHECK:

A background check (including criminal records and employment history review) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can begin work with RPCS. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the application status or start of employment.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:

Occasional travel may be required for field trips and other program-related activities.

• Demonstrated excellence in teaching or mentoring/training, preferably with secondary expertise in teaching AP classes, Economics or another social science.
• A strong desire to help educate courageous scholars and to create an inclusive and safe learning environment for all students.
• Familiarity with creating differentiated learning experiences aligned with formative assessments preferred.
• Demonstrated ability to integrate technology in content delivery/skill development.
• Familiarity with giving and receiving feedback for professional growth.
• Outstanding interpersonal skills with ability to communicate with colleagues, students, and parents professionally.
• Excellent organizational skills and strong attention to detail.
• Strong work ethic and high level of integrity.
• Growth mindset, flexibility, and openness to collaboration and experimentation.
• Knowledge and commitment around diversity, equity, and inclusion practices and the impact it has on the classroom climate and curriculum.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
• Bachelor’s degree in history or a related discipline. Graduate degree is preferred.
• Minimum of three years of demonstrated excellence in teaching in high school.
• Experience with inquiry-based learning pedagogies that put students at the center of their learning.
