The DNR is currently seeking a temporary Natural Resources Technician to support chronic wasting disease (CWD) efforts in the Grand Rapids area. This position will perform technical conservation work, and assist with planning, biological sampling, and data collection for chronic wasting disease surveillance.
The anticipated dates for this temporary position are September 11, 2024 through December 20, 2024.
Responsibilities include:
• Collect data to meet project objectives for a large-scale surveillance effort for CWD in wild whitetail deer in Minnesota.
• Assist with collection of biological samples at both self-service and in-person CWD sampling stations, data entry, and shipping of samples.
• Assist with other wildlife area habitat and facility related projects, as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge of ecology and wildlife biology.
Ability to use standard field techniques safely and effectively.
Oral and written communication skills sufficient to communicate technical information and record field data.
Ability to maintain accurate data records and field notes.
Ability to work effectively and courteously with DNR staff and members of the public.
Ability to safely operate and maintain trucks (4WD).
Ability to use GPS units, maps, and computers.
Computer proficiency, including experience with word processing and spreadsheets.
Ability to prioritize and accomplish tasks with minimal supervision.
Ability to navigate uneven terrain.
Ability to work in adverse weather and environmental conditions.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in collecting biological samples for CWD surveillance from deer or other cervids.
Experience interacting with deer hunters and other members of the public.
Experience using ArcGIS and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) software.
Knowledge, skills, and experience in operating and maintaining small power tools, hand tools, and other outdoor related equipment including brush saws, trucks, UTVs, and ATVs.
Ability to construct, repair, and maintain field equipment.
Additional Requirements
This position requires an unrestricted Class D Driver’s license with a clear driving record.
