Saint-Gobain is looking for a driven, talented, and experienced Sr. Electrical Engineer II to join our CertainTeed R&D Solar Platform team in leading and executing technical work to advance the team mission of creating new business through new product and service development. Projects will focus on product development activities related to CertainTeed’s BIPV (building integrated photovoltaics).
Role summary:
Under the direction of the R&D manager, the Sr. Electrical Engineer II will be responsible for the conceptual design & analysis, selection, prototyping, testing and validation of all of the electrical components in the BIPV. The candidate will work closely with the team to drive all aspects of the development process including presenting to marketing, vendors and colleagues. In addition to the candidate’s primary projects, the candidate will be expected to support projects led by others.
• Extensively utilizes research and experience to develop new products and processes to increase performance or advance fundamental research within a major product or technology area.
• Manages multiple projects simultaneously, on time, well documented and within budget to meet business and customer objectives.
Essential Functions include:
• Determine and manage electrical requirements for BIPV from business requirements
• Responsible for design of electrical components for BIPV system that meets installation, maintainability, reliability, and electrical requirements
• Electrical system sizing, layout and installation (Rapid shutdown device, inverter and batteries)
• Test for compatibility of off the shelf components, analyse results and make product selection based on system requirements. Complete installation manual.
• Responsible for NEC code compliance and UL certification for all electrical components
• Bench and developmental scale prototyping
• Test and validation of full size BIPV
• Troubleshoot commercial products and make improvements for ease of installation, usability, and maintainability
• BS Degree with a minimum of 12+ years’ experience, or MS with 7+ years of experience or PhD with 3+ years of experience in Electrical Engineering, Power Engineering or similar, required
• Experience in product development, determining requirements, designing, selecting, building prototype, testing, troubleshooting electrical components within a system, required
• Work with design or qualification of Solar systems electrical parts, required
• Cable management and wire harnessing – 3+ years experience, required
• CAD and electrical system drafting – 3+ years experience, required
• Certification – 1 year experience, preferred
• Power Engineering – 1 year experience, preferred
• Ability to travel about 15%
Additional knowledge, skills and ability:
• Be able to determine scope of the work, plan and execute with minor supervision
• Write electrical requirement and specification from product requirements
• Experience with system testing and qualification with products that have electrical components (examples:- connectors, inverters, batteries, rapid shut-down devices, solar panels)
• Ability to write test procedure for qualification of product
• Experience with integration of various electrical parts within a system
• Experience with testing reliability of electrical parts, connectors, and such
• Electrical system design and installatin documentation
• Evaluation and selection of electrical products
• Troubleshooting and RCA for electrical components
• NEC Code compliance-
• Bench and developmental scale prototyping and test development
• Working knowledge of solar system power management
• Familiarity with NEC standards for photovoltaics
• Work effectively with vendors, conduct meetings, action items and follow-up
• Scouting for new technology to improve BIPV performance or customer experience
• Writing innovation disclosure and being informed of competitive landscape IP, submitting patents
• Basic understanding of reliability engineering and how it can be applied to electicial design
