Overview
RTI International is one of the world’s leading research institutes, dedicated to improving the human condition by turning knowledge into practice. The Communications Practice Area has an immediate opening for a Senior UI/UX Designer on the User Experience Design and Product Management team. This position will be responsible for creating high-quality user experiences (UX) across a variety of digital products including data-rich websites, web tools, dashboards, and applications, that prioritize the user while supporting business needs. The Senior UX/UI Designer will provide product strategy and will work from concept to implementation to ensure seamless experiences for the end user. This position will create user interfaces (UI) of products while incorporating UX best practices and improve the usability of digital products through research and user testing. Critical to success in this position are creative problem-solving skills, strong design skills with an emphasis on user interfaces, attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
This position is open to individuals interested in working remotely or working from our headquarters in Research Triangle Park, NC, or one of RTI’s regional offices.
Responsibilities
• Create UX deliverables such as user flows, low-and high-fidelity wireframes, prototypes, personas, journey maps, and heuristic evaluations.
• Design simple user interfaces for platforms, and applications that are intuitive and delightful.
• Design with an awareness and understanding of browser sizes, device capabilities, and product functionality.
• Ensure all aspects of the product are easy to use and follow UX patterns and best practices.
• Provide quality control (QC) and quality assurance (QA) reviews of digital solutions on staging or development sites and provide documentation to the Development team.
• Creates style guides, and prototypes for successful handoff to the development team.
• Champion human-centered design principles and accessibility throughout the product development process.
• Participate in formative research (e.g., audits, interviews, focus groups, and surveys) to understand user needs. Help keep user needs in the forefront of all work and advocate for the user.
• Works with a multidisciplinary team (e.g., content, research, and development) using human-centered design principles and design thinking approaches, while promoting innovation and creative thinking among the team.
• Work closely with the product team to determine and implement new features and functionality, clearly defining the definition of done and adjusting the product roadmap where needed.
• Presents mockups and prototypes to internal clients that articulate the products’ overall vision and clearly considers the user experience.
• Articulate design decisions thoughtfully with an openness to feedback. Ability to provide feedback in a positive manner to other members of the design team.
Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree with 5 years of experience, Master’s degree with 3 years of experience or equivalent combination of experience working as a product designer, digital producer, user experience designer, user interface designer, or equivalent
• An online portfolio that demonstrates proven success with digital work and a high-level of craft
• Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States and should not require, now or in the future, sponsorship for employment visa status.
Desired Skills
• Ability to understand client objectives and requirements and translate these into digital experiences that put the user first.
• Knowledge of user interface and user experience best practices and standards.
• Understanding of accessibility guidelines (WCAG) and familiarity with Section 508 accessibility requirements. Experience designing products following accessibility standards
• Understanding of design elements such as visual systems and hierarchy and how they impact design.
• Understanding of design principles including layout, typography, and color theory
• Understand metrics that reflect the quality of the user experience and the impact of design changes.
• Understand development (technical) constraints when creating products.

• Experience with various industry software tools (examples include but not limited to: Adobe Creative Suite, Figma, Sketch, Asana, Git, Jira, etc.)
• Ability to work across other design disciplines (graphic design, brand, and identity design, etc.) if needed.
• Ability to work well with others and to work independently.
• Able to work on multiple projects, involving a small number of internal and/or external partners, with minimal oversight needed.
• Flexibility and ability to handle multiple tasks and work collaboratively within a matrix-oriented environment.
