The Opportunity
Join an experienced, passionate, and well respected mine closure team based in the USA. WSP is currently initiating a search for a Senior Mine Closure Manager for our US Mine Water and Environment Group. This position will provide leadership, technical direction, training, and management for multidisciplinary closure studies and project work. This position will ensure integrated mine closure subject matter, technical deliverables, and programs are delivered with a level of quality that meets client expectations and meets or exceeds acceptable industry and company standards.
The Senior Mine Closure Manager should bring solid technical experience, knowledge in integrated mine closure planning and an established professional network. Closure execution experience will be highly regarded. The experience, training, enthusiasm, strong communication skills and solutions-oriented focus will provide the foundation for this position to work as a valued and respected leader of our multidisciplinary closure team and assist them to tackle some of the world’s most challenging environmental and mine life cycle problems by delivering relevant and cost-effective solutions to WSP’s global mining clients.
The following locations will be considered but are not limited to: Reno, NV; Elko, NV; Albuquerque, NM; Salt Lake, UT; Tucson, AZ; and Phoenix, AZ.
Your Impact
• Lead large and complex mine closure projects by providing proactive and strategic leadership to multi-disciplinary leads as well as by offering direction, technical expertise in integrated mine closure planning and design, and support to ensure project objectives and deliverables are successfully achieved.
• Identify, progress, manage, and document closure planning processes for mining operations (ranging from conceptual through detailed design level for sites ranging from projects to legacy sites) in alignment with regulatory requirements, corporate guidance and / or good practice guidance.
• Write and review technical reports, collaborate with colleagues in different disciplines and regions at WSP, and provide high quality project deliverables that meet client needs according to agreed timelines and budgets.
• Work collaboratively with other members of the USA Mine Closure Team, other region Mine Closure teams and our broader Mining colleagues.
• Train and supervise junior professionals, providing technical review and input into their career development.
• Delegate tasks to junior staff, providing feedback and oversight.
• Ensure the allocation and availability of appropriate technical and project management resources to complete required tasks and manage the interfaces across technical disciplines and business units.
• Using your network of external contacts, provide liaise with clients as part of pursuit and proposal development and project delivery.
• Integrate with our global Practice Area Networks (PAN) to share technical knowledge and work opportunities.
• Participate in and promote a safety-first culture.
Required Qualifications
Who You Are
• Bachelor’s degree in one or more fields related to mine closure (i.e., environmental science, natural resource management, geochemistry, water management, mine waste geotechnics, mining engineering, land use planning, etc.).
• 15+ years of relevant (post-degree) experience working in a consulting engineering / science, or mining industry environment.
• A minimum of 5+ years of relevant experience related to mine closure planning and design with expertise in at least one of the services related to mine closure (i.e., cover design, risk evaluation, closure estimation, geochemistry, hydrogeology, water management, mine waste, revegetation, mining engineering, land use planning, etc.).
• Strong network of external mining contacts and understanding of the USA landscape.
• Strong knowledge of environmental and mining regulations relevant to closure.
• The ability to read, process, and concisely summarize technical information from across several disciplines.
• Developed problem solving skills and a holistic view of mine closure.
• Experience advising clients on leading practices in closure planning processes and outcomes and ability to communicate the short- and long-term implications of mine closure options.
• Ability to effectively delegate work and collaborate with interdisciplinary project teams.
• Excellent technical writing, interpersonal communication, and emotional intelligence. ability to establish and maintain good relationships with clients and colleagues.
• Ability to identify and manage competing priorities.
• A desire to work for a leading multi-disciplinary global consulting firm and be part of a growing and thriving team.
• Willingness to travel for occasional work assignments.
Preferred Qualifications
• Master’s Degree or higher in any engineering or environmental science discipline.
• Essential Licenses (e.g., PE, PG) as applicable and/or enhancing credentials and certifications.
• Strong experience in managing the review and approval of documents and discipline-specific deliverables, certifications, processes, and plans in a multi-project environment.
• Closure execution experience.
• Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Access, etc.)
