General Purpose of Job:
Directs the day-to-day activities and staff of the Food & Nutrition Services department, which are responsible for the preparation, cooking of food, and dining experience for patients, visitors, and caregivers. Provides nutritional services to patients including assessing/re-assessing individual nutritional needs, developing nutritional care plans, and counseling.
Essential Duties:
This job description is intended to cover the minimum essential duties assigned on a regular basis. Caregivers may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned by their leader. Leadership has the right to alter or modify the duties of the position.
• Directs the day-to-day activities and staff of the Food & Nutrition Services. Duties include but are not limited to, hiring, training, counseling, evaluating staff performance, menu development, reviewing and revising patient menus and experience design. Daily productivity and quality control for each department.
• Reviews and updates the Nutrition Care Manual; develops and implements departmental objectives, policies, procedures and standards and presents the updated manual and policies, annually, to the medical staff for their review and approval.
• Assures compliance with health department regulations and joint commission standards.
• Administers departmental budgets; assures expenditures are within approved budgets. Coordination of supply purchases and distribution.
• Supervises or initiates inventory and procurement of food and supplies from vendors and suppliers; assures compliance with purchasing group vendor contracts.
• Supervises the maintenance of a high level of sanitation and infection control and continuance of equipment maintenance programs.
• Investigates and resolves departmental related issues and concerns.
• Meets with patients to assess individual nutritional needs and develop a nutritional care plan based upon physician instructions and patient food preferences.
• Documents patient assessments, food preferences, nutritional care plan, and food interactions in a timely manner and in accordance with Hospital policies.
• Communicates regularly with physicians and nursing staff to monitor patient’s nutritional status, response to treatment, etc.; recommends dietary changes as needed.
• Works cooperatively and maintains communication with other departments and external parties to resolve problems and exchange information.
• Attends various internal team and task force meetings as assigned; performs related tasks as required.
• Facilitates and/or attends staff meetings and in-service programs.
• Supports and serves as a role model for our mission, vision, values, and customer service initiatives. Adheres to the organization’s policies and procedures and compliance guidelines.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements
General Requirements
• Valid Registered Dietitian licensure • Servsafe Certification or must obtain first six months of employment or equivalent certification through the MMPHD
Work Experience
• Minimum of 1 year of hospital food service/nutrition-care experience at the supervisory level
Education
• Bachelors degree in dietetics
Specialized Knowledge and Skills
• Knowledge of regulatory standards and hospital policies/procedures related to food preparation, handling and sanitation • Knowledge and understanding of general cleaning methods, materials and equipment • Knowledge of nutritional values of food and the therapeutic values of planned menus • Ability to effectively use computer applications such as spreadsheets, word processing, calendar, email and database software in performing work assignments • Serves regularly in a highly visible capacity: experience, skills, demeanor, and ability to handle difficult and sometimes stressful circumstances are a clear expectation • Written and computer skills necessary to prepare required documentation and nutrition education presentations • Interpersonal skills necessary to effectively communicate with patients, families, physicians and healthcare professionals in the exchange of information. The position is also required to handle problem situations in a tactful, courteous and respectful manner • Ability to consistently exemplify “on stage behavior” and embed “experience” into service. • Analytical ability to assist in the development of departmental policies, procedures, and work systems • Mental ability to adapt and respond to multiple priorities and demands, resolve problem situations in a positive manner, and coordinate food preparation and cooking schedules so that food will be ready at required times • Physical ability to transport instructional materials/equipment weighing up to 50 pounds. • Demonstrates ability to use a keyboard as may be required to perform the essential duties of the job • Experience in diabetes education preferred
