About the unit
6 South is a 32-bed surgical unit with a primary focus on post-operative care of the abdominal surgery patient. You will work very closely with the surgeons and surgical residents. The unit fosters good teamwork, a friendly atmosphere, good collaborative relationship with the multidisciplinary team members of case management, PT/OT, Dieticians and social work. The unit fosters open communication, professional autonomy, a multicultural atmosphere, certified preceptors, well-structured atmosphere, and will enable you to have a large variety of patients to allow for great nursing experience and development of assessment skills. The unit has 8 telemetry beds for patients requiring cardiac monitoring post-surgery.

Scope of work
Nurses, under the ANA scope of practice, utilize the framework of the nursing process to provide professional nursing care by incorporating patient-family centered care principles. Nurses provide quality patient care under the direction of the Nurse Leader according to Corewell Health’s policies and procedures. Applies the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation, evaluation and discharge needs of patient/family/significant other. Partners with and utilizes patient/family input and goals in planning plan of care. Demonstrates knowledge of and competently performs technical procedures and uses equipment properly. Documents in the patient record in a timely, accurate and concise manner. Develops teaching strategies for patient/family; documents education and learning appropriately in health record.

Qualifications
• Associates in Nursing Required
• Bachelors in Nursing Required within 5 years
• External candidates are required to have a minimum of 15 months of clinical experience (1 year clinical experience plus completion of nursing orientation) required. External candidate must successfully complete a competency assessment provided by nursing education required
• Internal candidate with less than 2 years of clinical experience must submit a letter of recommendation from their current Nurse Manager
• MI Registered Nurse (RN) Required
• AHA or ARC Basic Life Support (BLS) Required within 90 days
• Specialty Certification highly recommended within 2 years
