The Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences invites applications from candidates using computational approaches to understand behavior, learning, and cognition in humans and non-human animals. We welcome candidates working in any area of psychology (including cognitive, developmental, social, affective, developmental, or clinical psychology, and cognitive or behavioral neuroscience) using computational or quantitative methods (including artificial intelligence, machine learning, modeling, robotics, or data science). Candidates who use a combination of computational and experimental approaches are also invited to apply. The successful candidate will have an outstanding research record and an innovative research program. The position also involves teaching at the graduate and undergraduate levels and mentoring of students in research and professional development. The University of Iowa is a leading public university located in Iowa City, a UNESCO City of Literature with a high quality of life. This faculty position continues an extended period of departmental investment, highlighted most prominently by the recent completion of a new Psychological and Brain Sciences Building. The successful candidate will join growing groups of computational neuroscientists and psychiatrists and will have opportunities to collaborate with basic and clinical scientists working in such areas as learning and plasticity, neural circuits, development, perception and cognition, cognitive control, sleep, and brain disorders. Our faculty contribute actively to the university’s large and vibrant neuroscience community that includes the Iowa Neuroscience Institute, an NIH-supported Interdisciplinary Graduate Program in Neuroscience, a popular undergraduate major in neuroscience, and the NIH-funded iDream postbaccalaureate program. The Behavioral-Biomedical Interface Training Program, also supported by NIH, creates unique opportunities for integrative and cross-disciplinary research. The DeLTA Center brings together researchers interested in all aspects of learning and development.
There are extensive opportunities for collaboration with researchers in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the Carver College of Medicine, the College of Engineering, the College of Education, and the College of Public Health. Department faculty have ongoing collaborations with colleagues in such departments as Neuroscience and Pharmacology, Psychiatry, Biology, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Radiology, Computer Science, Health and Human Physiology, Communication Sciences and Disorders, Public Health, and Otolaryngology. The university also supports a variety of institutes, centers, and facilities, including the Institute for Clinical and Translational Science, the Magnetic Resonance Research Facility, which houses research-dedicated 3T and 7T scanners, the Center for Neurodegeneration, the Central Microscopy Research Facility, the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Injury Prevention Research Center, and the Iowa Institute of Human Genetics.
REQUIREMENTS
• PhD in psychology or closely related field.
• Research program in any area of psychology using computational or quantitative methods (including artificial intelligence, machine learning, modeling, robotics, or data science), or a combination of computational and experimental approaches.
• Outstanding research record and an innovative research program.
• Promise of outstanding teaching and mentorship at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
