Description:
GENERAL SUMMARY
Under the medical direction of an Anesthesiologist, develops anesthesia plans for patients and administers anesthesia. Observes patients’ physiological condition while under anesthesia and initiates corrective actions as necessary or as directed by physician. Performs pre- and post- operative evaluations on assigned cases, and documents same in patient charts and required records.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
At all times works under the medical direction of an Anesthesiologist.
Provides quality patient care considering age specific, developmental and cultural needs through competent anesthesia practice.
Assembles necessary supplies, drugs and equipment for each case, and tests equipment to ensure proper functioning for surgical procedure.
Reviews patients’ medical records to determine types of procedures to be performed and evaluate patient’s medical status.
Discusses and develops anesthetic plan with anesthesiologist.
Establishes or confirms the presence of appropriate intravenous access. If trained and experienced, may insert arterial catheters, perform spinal anesthesia, and IV regional anesthesia.
Safely induces, maintains and emerges the patient from anesthesia. Is cognizant of anesthetic agents’ actions and side effects.
Practices appropriate airway management.
Performs supportive life functions, including intratracheal intubation, management of blood, fluid and electrolyte loss and replacement for maintenance of cardiovascular and respiratory functions.
Identifies and manages emergency situations, including assessment of adequacy of recovery or antagonism of muscle relaxants, narcotics and other agents; implements appropriate management techniques.
Participates in cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
Carefully documents all activities on the anesthetic record or patients’ medical record. Reports to other departments when transferring patient care responsibilities.
Maintains knowledge of current trends and developments in the field by reading appropriate books, journals and other literature and attending related seminars, conferences and the like.
Performs any other related duties as requested or required.
Maintains good rapport and cooperative relationships. Approaches conflict in a constructive manner. Helps to identify problems, offer solutions, and participates in their resolution.
Maintains the confidentiality of information acquired pertaining to patient, physicians, employees, and visitors to Saint Joseph Mercy Health System. Discusses patient and hospital information only among appropriate personnel in appropriately private places.
Assumes responsibility for performance of job duties in the safest possible manner, to assure personal safety and that of coworkers, and to report all preventable hazards and unsafe practices immediately to management.

Supplemental Duties and Responsibilities:
May be involved in community work, scheduling education effort quality improvement activities.
Education, Experience, and Licensure
Requires a bachelor’s degree in Nursing. Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing Anesthesiology.
No previous experience required.
Current Registered Nurse and Nurse Specialty License in State of Michigan.
Annual BLS recertification
