In this role, you will have a direct impact on the Navy’s biggest challenges as you apply your systems engineering, software engineering and test, and team leadership skills to achieve the goals of APL USV prototype projects. You will be joining a highly creative, adaptable, and success-driven group, where you will help us build on APL’s legacy of scientific research and development and trusted service to the nation.As a Maritime Autonomy Operations Systems Engineer you will…• Choose how best apply Systems Engineering best practices to autonomy, AI, and uncrewed vehicles, ranging from early prototypes to formal acquisition by the Navy and other sponsors.• Ensure successful system development through end user engagement, mission decomposition and analysis, requirements definition, architecture development, and design trades.• Lead technical teams at APL who are prototyping software and hardware for maritime uncrewed systems.• Coordinate US Navy operator technical feedback for existing software and setting objectives and success criteria for new capabilities.• Develop storyboards, performance metrics, and test scenarios for autonomous USV capabilities.• Participate in field testing for APL prototype software and sensing systems.• Develop and deliver documentation and training materials for Navy operators.• Manage delivery of software updates and collection of field test data for USV autonomy and sensors.QualificationsYou meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you…• Have 5+ years of relevant Engineering experience and bachelors in Systems Engineering, Software Engineering, Naval Architecture, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a similar field.• Have experience with integration, test and experimentation, and troubleshooting of software and hardware for USVs.• Have experience leading teams to solve technical problems related to maritime systems, autonomy and AI software, or robotics.• Have experience developing mission CONOPS, understanding user needs, developing requirements, and managing risk.• Have applied your Systems Engineering and Test & Evaluation skills for the prototyping of US Navy USV, UUVs, or other DOD uncrewed systems.• Possess outstanding organization and planning skills, social skills, and outstanding written and oral communications skills.• Are willing and able to travel up to 10% of the time.• Are able to obtain an Interim Secret level security clearance by your start date and can ultimately obtain a Top Secret level clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.You’ll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you…• Have project leadership experience to include financial management, mentoring, and overseeing multiple technical teams working toward shared goals.• Have experience developing, integrating, and testing software architectures or software test pipelines, leading scrums or software teams, and/or implementing Agile software acquisition and DevSecOps.• Have direct experience with US Navy employment of autonomous USVs.• Have an active Secret clearance or higher.Base pay will take into account the selected candidate’s knowledge, experience, skill and/or abilities with consideration for internal parity. APL may offer bonuses or other forms of compensation per internal policy and/or contractual designation. Additional compensation may be provided in the form of a sign-on bonus, relocation benefits, locality allowance or discretionary payments for exceptional performance. APL provides a comprehensive benefits package including retirement plans, paid time off, medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short-term disability, long-term disability, flexible spending accounts, education assistance and training and development. Base pay range for this role: $90,000 to $220,000.
