The Grainger Engineering Design Innovation Laboratory is a set of design and prototyping facilities and interdisciplinary design programs for the College of Engineering. As an Instrument Maker in the Design Innovation Lab, the person in this role will work with students, staff, and faculty to fabricate parts for courses, research and extracurricular team projects . This position will involve:
-Training undergraduate student staff to assist in the CNC shop
-Coaching shop users through CNC machining projects for courses, student groups (e.g. automotive competition teams), and research
-Managing and delivering user training content for the CNC machines available in the CNC shop
-Developing and delivering shop-related class labs for engineering courses
-Upholding a high standard of cleanliness and reliability for the CNC machines, performing maintenance as needed
-Assisting with oversight of the Main Machine Shop operations
-Working on fee-for-service projects

The Instrument Maker reports to the ECB Shop Manager of the Grainger Engineering Design Innovation Laboratory. This position will require occasional evening shifts.
Responsibilities:
Performs as a highly skilled machinist in the design, creation, and/or modification of unique, highly intricate, and precise scientific equipment, industrial equipment, and mechanical systems. Maintains and modifies standard laboratory and specialized research equipment or instrumentation to be used in laboratory and other research environments.
• 70% Designs, develops, fabricates, tests, and maintains highly specialized instruments, components, and mechanical systems
• 5% Analyzes data and recommends protocol changes to assure quality and alignment with the strategic plan and unit objectives
• 5% Assists with the selection of materials and components with respect to physical properties, cost, and established guidelines
• 5% Maintains, repairs, and operates highly complex and/or specialized instrumentation, identifies damages and communicates repair or replacement needs to the appropriate entities
• 5% Locates, positions, and calibrates instrument parts and assemblies
• 5% Trains staff and stakeholders on processes and procedures
• 5% Facilitates classroom, online and/or laboratory instruction for one or more courses, including assessment of student performance

Qualifications:
Required:
-5+ years of professional experience using both MasterCAM and SolidWorks
-1+ years of teaching experience. (e.g. ‘on the job trainer’ or mentorship in business environment)
-Advanced journey-level knowledge training/skills required for the machine tools commonly used in an instrument/prototype shop, including but not limited to:
-Manual mills and lathes
-CNC mills and lathes
-Precision measuring tools and techniques
-Experience working with a wide range of materials, including plastics, metals, and ceramics
-Experience with Word, Excel, and Google Docs
-Excellent oral and written communication skills
-Ability to interact professionally with faculty, staff, and students in a diverse academic environment
Preferred:
-10+ years of current professional experience as a journeyman tool and die maker or journeyman machinist after completing an apprenticeship; please provide copy of State Journeyman Certification
-Journey-level tool and die maker certificate in the machine tool trade
-Experience with HAAS CNC milling machines + HAAS CNC lathes
-Experience with MIG and TIG welding
Work Schedule:
Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm, with some flexibility and will require occasional evening shifts.
