Job Summary:
The Healthy Communities Coordinator works in coordination and collaboration with local agencies, partners, and community residents to plan, implement, and evaluate policy, systems, and environmental change efforts to support nutrition and healthy food access for individuals and families with limited income. The Healthy Communities Coordinator position will primarily serve Milwaukee County. Initial programming efforts will include conducting community assessments to better understand health and nutrition priorities, supporting healthy food retail efforts in farmers’ markets and brick and mortar retail settings, and working with community health coalitions.

This role is housed in the Health and Well-being Institute’s FoodWIse program within UW-Madison’s Division of Extension. The Health & Well-Being Institute works to catalyze positive change in Wisconsin residents through evidence-based and community-engaged health promotion programs to improve health, build community capacity to identify and address health inequities, engage in collective action, and achieve greater health equity.
FoodWIse advances healthy eating habits, active lifestyles, and healthy community environments for individuals and families with limited incomes through nutrition education at the individual, community and systems levels. FoodWIse is federally funded by the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program-Education (SNAP-Ed) and Expanded Food and Nutrition Program (EFNEP) grants.
This is a bilingual preferred position. Responsibilities:
Develops and delivers public health informational programs and materials using the tenets of public health to educate the public and other health professionals, promote the health of the population, and advocate for improved health resources and policies.
• 15% Advocates for and disseminates health resources, policies, and safety information with educational materials and programs to appropriate entities to educate the public and health professionals
• 10% Collects and analyzes data by conducting research to improve public health programs and services
• 20% Develops materials, resources, and policies that support healthy behaviors and environments and informs, educates, and empowers the campus and community about environmental health and mental health issues
• 10% Directs grant and grant-funded public health programs and campaigns on established topics. May research, write, and manage grants as needed to support outreach, policies, and programming
• 25% Participates in public health committees as needed
• 10% Identifies, promotes, and maintains external partnerships to support the outreach program
• 5% Communicates plans, activities, and achievements to Area Extension Director, Program Managers, and relevant partners
• 5% Delivers educational programs (in target language and English) and tailors educational approaches in a manner that is culturally responsive and linguistically appropriate for the audiences’ needs

– At least 2 years of experience (professional, life, volunteer) working cooperatively with community-based organizations.
– Experience using collaborative leadership and team building to accomplish project goals.
– Experience facilitating and guiding diverse groups of people toward a common goal.
– Ability to effectively work with people from a variety of cultural backgrounds and identity groups, including those associated with race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, socioeconomic status, age, gender, disability, sexual orientation, and other aspects of human diversity.
– Commitment to the goals and values of Extension’s commitment to equity and social justice to support opportunities and outcomes for youth, families, and communities.
Preferred:
– Work or volunteer experience with food retail settings (farmers markets/brick and mortar retail)
– Experience leading or facilitating coalitions
– Understanding of cultural, social and political history, issues and dynamics of diverse populations living in Milwaukee County.
– Skills in developing, implementing, and evaluating multi-level educational programs and policy, systems and environmental change interventions.
– Skills in interpreting, utilizing, and applying evidence-based information and research findings.
– Ability to use problem-solving skills to successfully address complex issues.
– Spanish or Hmong speaking, writing and comprehension skills; knowledge and understanding of Hispanic/LatinX or Hmong culture. Language skills will be evaluated.

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.
