Job Description:
The Environmental Technician / Range and Training Land (RTLA) Field Crew Leader is responsible for managing the collection and maintenance of data in various inventory and monitoring projects as directed by the RTLA Coordinator at Fort Drum, NY as part of the Integrated Training Area Management (ITAM) Program.
Responsibilities’ include, but are not limited too:
• Execute a monitoring program to quantify both short-term and long-term impacts of military training activities and support management decisions.
• Implement monitoring protocols and assessments of training land condition including soil condition, vegetation condition, maneuver trail condition, culverts, heavy use sites, and burn areas.
• Conduct data collection to include training and supervising field crews.
• Direct the day-to-day work of the seasonal field crews and ensure they have received the appropriate training in data collection techniques, safety, and operational requirements.
• Assist the RTLA Coordinator in analyzing data and writing reports as needed.
• Applying herbicides to fields and forests according to schedule, safety procedures, and label instructions.
• Scout, diagnose, treat sites and provide feedback to your project director on pest populations, disease stresses and plant health.
• You will be applying organic and synthetic herbicide control measures and applications to grasses, trees and shrubs.
• Monitor landscape health and care needs.
• Diagnose primary turf problems and basic pest identification.
• Complete proper documentation as required by The Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.
• Responding on a timely basis to customer requests.
• Complete required production forms and customer instructions.
Basic Qualifications:
• US driver’s license.
• US citizenship.
• Ability to successfully pass NAC-I (National Agency Check with Inquiries) investigation.
• Ability to use computers and familiarity with Microsoft Office products.
• Demonstrated ability to perform field work under severe environmental conditions and in rugged terrain.
• Experience driving a 4WD vehicle in difficult terrain.
• Bachelors Degree in Natural Resources or related field combined with a minimum of two (2) years relevant work experience.
• One (1) year in a leadership role and a minimum one (1) year working on a military installation.
• Demonstrated ability to perform field work under severe environmental condition and in rugged terrain, vegetation inventory, monitoring, and data collection in Northeastern North American ecosystems.
• Advanced knowledge of Northeastern North American plant species and communities.
• Minimum two (2) years of experience using ESRI ArcMap 10.3 or higher, a minimum two (2) years of experience using ESRI ArcPad 10.2 or higher.
• Experience in spraying, fertilization and Integrated Pest Management.
• Knowledge of plant I.D., pests and diseases.
• New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) Licensed Applicator.
• Two years of experience in Fertilization and Chemicals required.
• Ability to work effectively in a team environment as well as able to perform with minimum supervision and direction.
• Ability to communicate with and serve multiple clients.
• Ability to complete paperwork accurately and timely.
• Be able to take a keen sense of ownership of responsibilities.
PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (PPE) REQUIREMENTS:
• Use of PPE to include long sleeves, bloused boots or pant legs taped and conducting check for ticks each time you leave the field during tick season.
• Preferred: Ability and willingness to use appropriate PPE, to include DEET and Permethrin treated clothing to repel biting insects and ticks.

• Strict adherence to safety protocols related to Covid-19.

Salary Range:
$15.68 – $71.30
