The Defense Sector within the Leidos Corporation has an opening for a Director of Hardware and Electrical (HWE) Engineering. The Sector Director of HWE Engineering will create, grow, mentor and allocate resources within a Hardware and Electrical Engineering organization to ensure that the HWE engineers have what is necessary to be successful.
Leidos Defense HWE Engineering operates as a function of overall Defense Sector Engineering alongside Chief Technology Officers and Solution Architects to ensure technical discrimination, compelling and winning technical solutions that are executable at a profit and coordinated across the broader Leidos enterprise. All positions are housed within the overarching Leidos Office of Technology.
As the Director of Hardware and Electrical Engineering, the successful candidate will represent HWE Engineering needs and workforce planning into the Engineering Function, and will be responsible for all aspects of the HWE engineering discipline and flawless program execution within the Sector.
This position can be supported from either our Reston – VA headquarters or Huntsville – AL office. While occasional telework is allowed, you are expected to work from either location 4 days per week.
Primary Responsibilities:
• Provide strategic direction and leadership to the Hardware and Electrical Engineering Team, and foster a collaborative and innovative work environment
• Develop and maintain a Sector level Hardware Development Plan, including associated Standards and metrics
• Define Common Tools and Processes surrounding HWE Development
• Develop a training strategy for all employees in the HWE discipline
• Manage budgets and resource distribution
• Approve HWE portion of bids/proposals
• Participate in the definition and implementation of the long-term engineering strategy aligned to the Sector and Corporate Technology Strategies, and the ever-evolving set of Sector and Corporate goals.
• Collaborate with Sector and Business Area Management and Business Development Leadership to execute our strategies and to further our business goals.
• Collaborate with cross functional teams, including software engineering, systems engineering to ensure seamless integration of Hardware and Electrical components
• Active participation in the Capture Process to include writing and reviewing proposal material.
• Develop and mentor engineering staff to include providing career guidance and professional growth opportunities for high potential employees
• Support engineering initiatives across the Defense Sector and the entire Leidos enterprise. These initiatives will focus on engineering, capability, process, differentiation, technical solutioning, proposal development, and program execution – all to further Leidos engineering discrimination and growth goals with agility, speed, and security.
• Oversee the design, development and testing of hardware and electrical systems ensuring compliance with industry standards and regulations
• Establish and maintain relationships with external partners, vendors and subcontractors to support project requirements and enhance capabilities
• In collaboration with Systems Engineering, be a champion for Digital Engineering, Digital Threads and Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) for the Sector and broader Leidos Company.
Basic Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree in Hardware / Electrical Engineering or relevant technical field and 17+ years of relevant experience in computer hardware and electrical engineering.
• 7+ years of related engineering experience on large acquisition programs, large systems delivery programs, and PoRs – and managing large engineering teams
• Demonstrated people management in multiple management styles and scenarios (matrix, Functional, Projectized, Composite, etc.)
• Prior technical roles within similar organizations with growing duties and responsibilities
• Engineering domain experience includes:
• Technical authority to ensure flawless execution on existing programs,
• Familiar with industry standard tools including MCAD and ECAD (PRO-E, Multisim, Mentor Graphics, etc), MATLAB, Simulink, Labview, Arduino, etc.
• Developing, enforcing, and improving engineering policy, standards, best practices, and management
• Familiarity and use of standard program management tools such as Integrated Master Schedule (IMS), Earned Value Management System (EVMS), etc.
• Experience with policy formation, performance management, and best practices in the Defense, Intelligence and Space industry
• Strong oral and written communication skills, along with public speaking skills
• Ability to influence and persuade others, as well as handle difficult negotiations requiring a well-developed sense of engineering execution
• Ability to mentor, lead, and promote talent
• Proven ability to lead/manage large organizations to include workforce planning
• Significant experience supporting capture activities to include chairing/participating in Gate Reviews, writing specific sections of proposals, and providing preliminary technical guidance for solutions
• US citizenship is required and able to obtain TS/SCI clearance and higher.
Preferred Qualifications:
• A Master’s degree or Ph.D. in a relevant technology and engineering field will be given preference.
• Active TS/SCI Security Clearance or higher is preferred

Pay Range:
Pay Range $144,300.00 – $260,850.00
