THE POSITION:
Reporting directly to the VP Controller, the Director of Accounting is responsible for the company’s day-to-day accounting operations, controls, and reporting. Overseeing two direct reports- Sr Accounting Manager and Accounting Manager- who further manage senior/staff accountants. Applicants should have both public/private experience and possess strong technical, organizational, and interpersonal skills. The right candidate will also demonstrate a positive attitude that matches the entrepreneurial spirit of the company. The Director of Accounting will support the VP Controller in all business matters and work with the private equity firm accounting and tax personnel, external audit and tax firms, and Shade Store business partners to support accurate financial statements, internal controls and proper accounting.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Lead monthly, quarterly and year-end closings of financial statements
• * Preparation and review of journal entries and account reconciliations, with additional disclosure requirements on quarters and year end
• Use of NetSuite and ePIC ERP’s
• Use of specialized software to account for capital leases under ASC 842
• Use of custom-built source system for orders and revenue
• Ensure Intercompany accounting is properly maintained and recorded.
• Lead insurance risk management program
• Manage the accounting/tracking for Insurance Programs which includes self-insurance plans for workers compensation, auto claims, and employee health interfacing with legal and HR
• Renewal processes understanding the basics of property and casualty markets, underlying exposures and the establishment of controls to underwrite less risk onto said exposures.
• Continuously review accounting for existing policies and ensure updates to business are provided in a timely manner to broker/insurance providers.
• Identify and implement continuous improvement initiatives with respect to accounting policies and procedures as required to ensure that personnel and financial information is secure and reporting is in accordance with US GAAP
• Establish, monitor and maintain controls that verify the integrity of all accounting systems, processes and data.
• Research and review of technical accounting matters providing guidance to team and business partners
• Coordinate with information technology partners to resolve system issues, set project priorities, and better leverage available technologies
• Act as liaison with external auditors in completing year-end audits, providing support for controls and substantive testing as well as financial statement preparation
• Support the external tax team with any income tax and K-1 reporting needs including but not limited to data, insights, details, support, etc. in the preparation of the income tax provision, compliance filings, and other miscellaneous tax related tasks
• Manage tax planning and compliance with sales/use tax, real and personal property and other applicable local taxes, ensuring tax account reconciliations and reporting is performed timely. Establish and update processes as needed. Main point of contact with tax authorities as audits arise.
• Coordinate with Financial Planning & Analysis team to provide business partners with an understanding of actual results to date and assistance as needed with budgets/forecasts
• Supervision Received: Plans, designs, and carries out programs, projects, studies, or other work independently. Receives clear guidance and priorities from Controller VP and Chief Financial Officer.
• Supervisory Duties: Proactively leads, train and motivates a team of experienced accounting professionals in a dynamic environment (hybrid and multiple locations). Demonstrates organizational, motivational, communication, and interpersonal skills required.
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR:
• BS in Accounting or equivalent field required; Master’s Degree in Accounting or equivalent field is preferred
• CPA required
• At least 10 years of progressive accounting experience, preferably in retail or manufacturing industry.
• 4+ years of experience with a mid-size or Big 4 public accounting firm.
• Demonstrated leadership ability, team management, and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment with fluctuating priorities and deadlines, and work with all levels of management and employees.
• Able to present financial data in a concise, logical and useful manner with robust financial analytical skills.
• Ability to think proactively, with strong written and verbal skills and the ability to work well both independently and collaboratively.
• Experience working on state and local taxes, partnership taxes and various compliance issues a plus.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office (especially Excel)
• NetSuite, Concur, Lease Query, and Visual Lease experience a plus.

The base salary compensation range for this position is $160-180k, commensurate with experience
