Job Summary:
Our Researcher I position will oversee the Computer Assisted Personal Interviewing (CAPI) field operations for the CAPI projects at the University of Wisconsin Survey Center (UWSC). This position will be responsible for supervising a staff of CAPI interviewers for the Wisconsin Longitudinal Study (WLS), the Midlife in the United States study (MIDUS), and the Milwaukee Area Family Finances study, among others. Duties include screening/hiring CAPI Interviewers, developing and leading CAPI interviewer training, tracking, and reporting CAPI project data, and maintaining a rigorous quality control system. Includes supervision of field staff who conduct social science research by administering interviews in Wisconsin and across the United States. Some studies require administering anthropometric measures and collecting DNA and other biological samples from respondents.

California Youth Transitions to Adulthood Study (CalYOUTH)
The California Youth Transitions to Adulthood Study was an evaluation of the impact of AB12, the California Fostering Connections to Success Act, on outcomes during the transition to adulthood for foster youth. CalYOUTH is a longitudinal survey of approximately 800 foster care youth in the state of California. Modeled after the very successful Midwest Young Adult Study conducted by UWSC, CalYOUTH interviewed youth prior to their 18th birthday at Wave 1, then followed-up at age 20 for Wave 2, and age 22 for Wave 3. In collaboration with the California Department of Social Services, and funded by multiple foundations, CalYOUTH was conducted over a 5-year period. The in-person interviews were approximately 75-90 minutes in length and included Audio-CASI for sensitive questions. The study was designed to capture information about a broad range of life experiences. Examples of survey modules included foster care placement characteristics and experiences, experience with the juvenile courts, education, employment, health and development, social support and community connections, service utilization, and plans and attitudes about the future. A fourth round of interviews was completed in 2019.
The Midlife in the United States (MIDUS) Retention Early Warning Study
In 2018, UWSC conducted a national in-person field effort to locate and interview MIDUS respondents who participated in early rounds of the study but later attrited. The effort will be the first of its kind for the landmark MIDUS research enterprise to contact and interview participants who subsequently became non-respondents in later rounds of data collection. Interviews for MIDUS Early Warning will include physical measurements, anthroprometric measures and biomarkers.
Responsibilities:
Provides technical expertise to fundamental and/or applied scientific research under the direction of senior research personnel or faculty.
• 20% Collects and analyzes basic research data, conducts experiments and interviews, and documents results according to established policies and procedures
• 5% Conducts literature reviews, prepares reports and materials, and disseminates information to appropriate entities and assists with publications
• 20% Trains individuals and groups on equipment operations, research protocols, and techniques within a specialized laboratory or research area
• 15% Assists with the development of research methodologies and procedures
• 15% Identifies concerns and recommends solutions to leadership
• 5% Assists in developing grant applications and proposals to secure research funding
• 20% Exercises supervisory authority, including hiring, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 full-time equivalent (FTE) employees

– One year of experience training and supervising survey research personnel in a social science setting desired
– Experience with data quality control and project progress monitoring desired
– Knowledge of CASES (Computer-Assisted Survey Execution System) software desired
– Client interaction experience and cash handling experience preferred

Depending on Qualifications
The typical starting salary range for this position is $48,000 to $60,000 depending on qualifications and experience. Employees in this position can expect to receive benefits such as generous vacation, holidays and paid time off; competitive insurances and saving accounts; and retirement benefits.
