Founded by the Congregation of Holy Cross in 1948, Stonehill is a private Catholic college located just 22 miles from downtown Boston on a beautiful 384-acre campus in Easton, Massachusetts. The Campus Minister for Music and Liturgy directs music and liturgy for the College, coordinates the training of liturgical ministers, and assists with the development of prayer experiences for the College community.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
• Provides pastoral presence and outreach to members of the college community.
• Plan and lead regular rehearsals with the Chapel Choir and Instrumental Ensemble to prepare for all the services. Arrange music as necessary.
• Recruit and coordinate volunteer musicians, including vocalists and instrumentalists. Recruits, trains, and rehearses with student cantors as necessary.
• Choose suitable music for all relevant College liturgies and services, adhering to Catholic liturgical guidelines.
• Arrange music for the Chapel Choir and its instrumental ensemble make-up, as needed.
• Provides musical accompaniment for the 7:00 pm Sunday Mass during the academic year (approximately 14-16 Sundays per semester), led by the Chapel Choir. Also accompanies the cantor-led monthly Lucernarium services during the academic year held after the 7:00 pm Mass.
• Accompany the cantor-led weekly 11:00 am Sunday Mass held throughout the year. If unable to accompany, responsible for ensuring high-quality coverage.
• Assist with setup and other logistics for all major College liturgical events, including music preparation and Chapel Choir participation: Welcome Mass, Mass of the Holy Spirit, and Baccalaureate Mass. Assist as needed with Commencement.
• Assist with setup and other logistics for other special Chapel of Mary services and liturgies including music and Chapel Choir (and/or cantor) preparations: Century Club Mass, Gaudete Mass, Lessons & Carols, Christmas Eve, Tenebrae, Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter Sunday, Alumni Reunion Masses, Holy Days of Obligation, and other Campus Ministry services.
• Scheduling of outside instrumentalists, when necessary, but with a focus on fostering the growth of a student ensemble.
• Maintain Chapel instruments, scheduling tuning, and repairs as needed.
• Responsible for worship aid design, layout, music selection, printing, and distribution for all relevant College events.
• Coordinates and participates in the annual liturgy with the Boston Black Catholic Choir.
• Plans, coordinates, and schedules Liturgical Ministers (altar servers, lectors, hospitality, and cantors) by use of Ministry Scheduler Pro software. Help execute a Liturgical Minister Training session once a year, and coordinate one-on-one training as needed.
• Prepare the liturgical environment for all seasons and events according to liturgical guidelines.
• Maintain an annual budget for music, instrumentalists, and Chapel Choir needs.
• Coordinate the preparation of music selections and programs for all Chapel of Mary weddings with the engaged couple. Responsible for accompanying weddings or finding a suitable substitute (Additional stipend provided for accompanist and cantor).
• Serve as the musician for the Holy Cross community with funerals, as well as funerals held in the Chapel of Mary. Coordinate the preparation of music selections and programs for all Chapel of Mary funerals. • Participates in Campus Ministry activities, retreats, and weekly staff meetings. Serves as a representative of Campus Ministry on any assigned campus committees.
• Works with individual students who show musical promise in a developmental and mentorship capacity.
• Issue and oversee the fulfillment of the Ditmar Music scholarship.
• Seek out opportunities for Chapel Choir outreach, through off-campus concerts, Choir-led Masses at other parishes, and International Singing Pilgrimages.
• Other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience
• Master’s degree (M.A.) or equivalent; or minimum five years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Ability to read music and play piano and organ proficiency. Knowledge of orchestral and band instruments, scoring, and conducting.
• A valid driver’s license is required.
