Overview
AltaPointe’s Adult Residential Services are designed for consumers with serious and persistent mental illness who require social rehabilitation and community support. Combining medical, nursing and clinical services, our staff provides care and treatment for more than 200 adults in need of intensive service provision. The Adult Residential Services Program consists of group homes, which are supervised 24 hours/day when consumers are on the premises. Expected outcomes are the same for each adult group home: to prevent re-hospitalization and to maximize and maintain successful community placement. Residential care focuses on the rehabilitation and return to the community of seriously mentally ill consumers.
Responsibilities
General Responsibilities
• Leads the peer services program to provide guidance & support to the Certified Peer Specialist staff to uphold principles of recovery-oriented, person-centered, and relationship-focused care to help peers achieve a meaningful and purposeful life.
• Assists ARS management with administering appropriate Human Resources functions
• Engages peers in collaborative caring relationships and provides support utilizing interpersonal skills, knowledge about recovery from behavioral health conditions and attitudes consistent with a recovery orientation.
• Provides structured, scheduled activities that promote socialization, recovery, self-advocacy, development of natural supports, and maintenance of community living skills.
• Shares lived experiences of recovery as a way of inspiring peers and helps peers discover recovery practices that work for them.
• Educates peers about health, wellness and recovery supports by conducting evidenced based programming (SAIL and/or Bingocize)
• Promote healthy lifestyles to reduce identifiable health risks and increase healthy behaviors intended to extend the peers lifespan
• Meets daily productivity standards through individual and group peer support services.
• Helps peers to manage crises and utilize strategies that reduce risks to peers and others.
• Uses respectful, person-centered, recovery-oriented language in written and verbal interactions with peers, families, community members, and others.
• Educates colleagues about the process of recovery and advocacy efforts to eliminate discrimination of people with behavioral health conditions
• Effectively collaborates with treatment team members and ensures that the plan reflects the needs and preferences of the individual
• Works with staff to plan and implement recreational activities
Clinical Record Keeping
• Documents in a timely fashion per AltaPointe policy
• Documents legibly in a clear and concise manner services provided on a progress note
• Documents individualized responses to services provided
• Documents community meetings in each assigned program
Supervision and Consultation
• Conducts staff meetings, provides case consultation, and monitors certified peer specialist interactions with peers and staff
• Seeks supervision and consultation as needed
• Accepts and employs suggestions for improvement
• Actively seeks opportunities to increase knowledge and skills of peer support
• Uses supervision effectively by monitoring self and relationships, preparing for meetings and engaging in problem solving strategies
• Attends and participates in staff meetings as required

Administrative and Other Related Duties as Assigned:
• Actively participates in Performance Improvement activities
• Actively participates in AltaPointe committees as required
• Completes assigned tasks in a timely manner
• Follows AltaPointe policies and procedures
• Attends appropriate in-services training and other workshops
Qualifications
High school diploma or its equivalent; Bachelor’s degree preferred; in lieu of Bachelor’s degree the employee shall have 1 year of leadership experience, must be a current or former recipient of mental health services for no less than one (1) year with a significant mental health disorder as defined by the DSM; ability to identify as a recipient of mental health services and speak openly regarding personal diagnosis and treatment; a valid, verifiable driver’s license, age 23 or older, a good driving record, reliable transportation and verifiable vehicle liability insurance; ability to attend out-of-town Certified Peer Specialist training for certification; demonstrated experience with and knowledge of the Alabama public mental health system; knowledge of adult specific competencies, outlined below, to be attained within six (6) months of employment:
• Knowledge of psychiatric disorders in the adult population
• Knowledge of cultural diversity
• Knowledge of behavior management, crisis intervention and interventions common to acute psychotic individuals, as well as, to non-violent crisis intervention practices.
• Knowledge of Psychiatric Rehabilitation principles
• Knowledge of educational methods appropriate to adults with severe and persistent psychiatric disorders
• Knowledge in Motivational Interviewing techniques
• Successful completion of certified peer specialist training
• Certification as SAIL instructor
