About ECU Health SurgiCenter
ECU Health SurgiCenter is a freestanding facility with a multi-specialty staff of approximately 200 physicians, all guided by a single goal: to provide quality outpatient surgical care in a patient- and family-centered environment. Performing more than 12,000 outpatient surgical procedures a year, the facility offers a convenient—and clinically excellent—alternative to inpatient hospitalization for a wide range of surgical procedures. Outpatient procedures are performed in eight modern, well-equipped suites by surgeons specializing in dental and oral surgery, orthopedics, gastroenterology, general and plastic surgery, gynecology, podiatry, neurosurgery, urology and more.
Position Summary
Responsible for capturing data from the medical records for the purpose of reimbursement, statistics, research/studies, resource allocation and benchmarking. Processes credentialing applications using established policies and procedures. Collects data for monitors and compiles reports.
Responsibilities:
• All activities must be accomplished in accordance with national and facility coding guidelines/rules and payment methodologies. Activities must also be performed with adherence to Federal Compliance Regulations and Medical Necessity Guidelines.
• Abides by the Standards of Ethical Coding as set forth by the American Health Information Management Association and adheres to official coding guidelines.
• Processes applications for Physicians, Advanced Practice Professionals, and Physician Employed Personnel for initial appointment, reappointment and status changes using required standards and policies and procedures.
• Creates and reviews departmental policies and procedures for duties performed.
• Assists the HIMS department in meeting TJC requirements.
• Coding accuracy must be consistently maintained at 95% or better.
• Productivity must consistently meet minimum established standards.
• Communicates with physicians and other medical staff members to clarify difficult medical record documentation to insure accurate code assignment.
• Reviews medical records using surgical monitoring indicators.
• Merges duplicate records as necessary.
• Performs peer coding audits.
• Maintains up-to-date credentialing files (licenses, DEA, insurance, etc.) and CACTUS database.
• Reviews non-covered services and accounts denied for medical necessity (Accounts Review request and write off report). Researches denials as necessary for resolution.
• Maintains a clean and neat work environment.
• Participates in educational activities as necessary.
• Attendance at educational classes for coding or other topics as deemed necessary by the HIMS Manager.
• Works with students as assigned from affiliated Health Information programs.
• Performs work with a team player attitude; is loyal to the department goals and objectives; and is supportive of management and colleagues.
• Submits daily productivity statistics and monthly report.
• Compiles reports and statistics with data.
• Participates in collecting data for departmental monitors. Compiles reports and graphs as needed.
• Complies with applicable federal, state and local laws and government regulations.
• Complies with and reports any actual or perceived violations of the Code of Conduct or Compliance Program.
• Demonstrates support of research through active participation in the collection of data for identified research projects.
• Demonstrates appropriate, caring behavior in the workplace ¿ treating patients, their families, visitors, and staff with respect and dignity.
• Code and abstract medical records.
• Demonstrates an understanding of the medicolegal implication and responsibilities related to coding and the medical record.
• Responsible for maintaining one medical record for each patient.
• Acts as liaison between ECU Health SurgiCenter and ECU Health Medical Center Tumor Registry.
• Performs other departmental duties as needed (e.g. release of information, ordering lenses, ensuring receipt of pathology and culture reports, chart assembly and chart control, etc.).
• Performs other duties as requested by the HIMS Manager.
• Fulfills mandatory educational requirements annually.
• Maintains a record of participation in all educational activities.
• Shares knowledge gained from continuing education sessions informally in staff meetings.
• Attends monthly staff meetings and is accountable for information presented.
• Attends and utilizes staff development programs and educational resources to meet unit objectives and/or individual objectives.
• Knows and adheres to the policies and procedures of ECU Health SurgiCenter.
Minimum Requirements
• High School graduate or equivalent.
• 2 year degree in Health Information Technology or a 4 year degree in Health Information Management- or higher.
• Credentialed as an RHIT or RHIA or eligible to take the accreditation exam required.
• One to two years of experience with ICD-9-CM and CPT-4 coding preferred.
• Basic computer skills are required.
• Proficient in Word and Excel.
• Encoder computer experience preferred.
