RESEARCH SCIENTIST
Science Applications International Corp. (SAIC) is seeking a research scientist to support the Hydrological Sciences Lab (HSL) at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD. The successful candidate will work with NASA scientists, in close partnership with other national and international agencies/organizations, to advance the science of measuring and evaluating the important role of riparian zones in harboring and preserving biodiversity throughout the planet. The candidate will apply advanced machine learning methods, utilizing remote sensing data from NASA and other agencies, and commercial platforms, to support the development of integrated water cycle modeling tools in an open science environment. The candidate will be expected to lead the analysis and synthesis of model results, and lead/support the development of peer-reviewed publications and presentations at domestic and international conferences.
Qualifications
Desired Education and Skills
• Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in atmospheric science, geophysics, hydrology, or related
discipline.
• High level understanding of:
– Geographic information system (GIS) software (i.e., QGIS), analyzing and editing spatial information, as well as composing and exporting graphical maps.
– Cloud-based geospatial analysis platforms (specifically Google Earth Engine).
– Remotely sensed and modeled earth science datasets and their application to hydrology and ecology.
– Earth systems modeling and forecasting systems, including model and forecast frameworks, development, implementation, evaluation, and validation.
– Modern machine learning methods and tools.
• Proficiency with modern programming languages such as Fortran, Python, Java, MATLAB, R and other scripting languages in a Unix/linux based multiprocessor supercomputing environment.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills
• Good organizational skills related to:
– Workload planning and progress tracking
– Management of multiple tasks
• Team player
